Spectrum: The advantages of e-bikes and pedelecs in the urban jungle of the big city are now undisputed. In many cases, a motorized bike is faster, more environmentally friendly and more relaxed than a car. The Austrian Automobile, Motorbike and Touring Club (ÖAMTC) has recognized the signs of the times and is now using Haibike brand pedelecs for mobile breakdown assistance in Vienna.
Of the 14 ÖAMTC breakdown drivers active in Vienna, two will always be on the road with e-bikes in the future. In order to be prepared for (almost) every defect, the two drivers are also on the road with a trailer that can be used to repair most breakdowns: "The equipment was put together based on the analysis of the causes of breakdowns in Vienna - our e-bike breakdown drivers can fix three quarters of all breakdowns," says ÖAMTC association director Oliver Schmerold.
With increasing traffic, especially in metropolises like the Austrian capital, service providers of all kinds are now forced to rethink and adapt to the circumstances - the use of pedelecs is the logical consequence, as the association president explained at the press presentation: "With an e-bike as an emergency vehicle, you can take advantage of the advantages in urban traffic: no traffic jams, fewer one-way streets, fewer driving bans and more flexible parking options at the member's vehicle enable rapid breakdown assistance for all vehicles, including bicycles."
The two breakdown pedelecs come from the German manufacturer Haibike: The Xduro HardNine PRO model comes with a 250-watt Bosch drive and a Fox suspension fork with 100mm spring travel - so potholes and curbs shouldn't be too big of an obstacle.
