After my unwanted forced break, I headed south in February to collect the first training kilometers on the racing bike.
Unlike the previous training camps, where I had borrowed a bike, thanks to GREEN'N FIT I was able to take the BMC team bike with me and ride it in. Because in addition to the bike (thanks BMC :-)) I was also provided with the bike case from B&W (thanks B&W :-)).
I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about packing my little black BMC kitten in a “suitcase” because airports are not exactly gentle with luggage, as usual. So it was time to pack the bike well ...
... and off to the south to ...
Luckily my concern was unfounded! Both the suitcase and the bike survived the journey (both the flight and the car ride ;-)) well - so did we - by the way -
and so the BMC was promptly ready for the first tours.
After we had assembled, adjusted and briefly tested our bikes on the day of arrival, we set off on our first tour the following day, highly motivated. Ah, we had great plans and ideas about what we wanted to ride... The king's stage was supposed to be the Ironman bike course. But the island promptly brought us back to earth. Lanzarote is not Mallorca!
Our house was in Playa Blanca. This meant that as we headed north, we had to contend with the so-called "trade winds" from the north-northeast. Our mountains should be the wind, we were aware of that in advance, but not that we would have to fight 10 km in 40 minutes on the level (outside the GA1) - pure head cinema!!!!
Result: first signs of hypoglycaemia after 30 kilometers including a supermarket robbery! So we got the first day behind us with a hard-fought 85 kilometers, which then led to us reconsidering our previously made plans. Because the wind shouldn't get any less during the week...
Freed from any idea of kilometers and switched our heads to "wind" (it took a little longer for some than for the other), we drove around the island little by little over the following days and were able to experience the diversity of Lanzarote - both in terms of landscape:
... as well as culinary:
Two of the most beautiful tours, in the fight against the wind, looked like this:
1. In the south
So the first training camp on Lanzarote in 2015 flew by in no time at all... oh, I don't know how many kilometers or meters in altitude in total... it doesn't matter either 😉
Most importantly, we all survived and it was fun!!!
See you soon, you beautiful, windy island!!
PS: Also this time my BMC darling stayed intact. Thank you B&W for the great bike case!!!!!
The next test follows when it says: Mallorca, here we come 🙂
