The route for the world record led from the town of Bahia Inglesa on the Pacific coast across the Atacama desert up to the Ojos del Salado. Kunze had planned three days for the world record. In total, the Thuringian covered a distance of almost 343 kilometers in his challenge. Kunze reached the height of 4400 meters after 27 hours. The following day, after 10 hours, the mark for the new world record was set: 6233 meters! The 48-year-old Thuringian broke the world record of 2010 meters set by André Hauschke from Euskirchen in April 6085. Kunze needed a total travel time of 37 hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds for the new world altitude record.
