Test: Wireless bike computers with altitude measurement are the ideal basis for monitoring your own performance and training systematically. The selection here is large, the market very confusing. Scope of delivery, features and expansion options sometimes differ greatly. Reason enough for us to take a closer look at some representatives of this category. Which bike computer is worthwhile, where the individual strengths and weaknesses lie and where you can get the desired computer at the cheapest price: you can find out all this in our list of the best.
What should you look out for when buying a wireless bike computer?
The demands on the range of functions are decisive. So you can sort out many models right from the start. Do I need a heart rate measurement? What about cadence measurement? Is this interesting for me? These are the questions you should ask yourself before you buy. It is also important to note that the requirements can also change over time - just because you are not interested in your cadence at the moment does not mean that this will be the case again in the next season. It might be worth keeping the option open. Many computers offer the possibility of retrofitting such functions, some even bring the corresponding sensors directly with them. A thorough comparison should be made here. The same applies to a possible evaluation of the results on the home computer. Some bike computers offer this option and have their own software solutions for it.
How do we test?
We assemble and set up the computers with all the sensors that come with them. There are already blatant differences here: while this is done by itself on one computer, it costs endless nerves and a lot of time on another. Our "test round" for bike computers checks all the important functions: We have a few meters in altitude, fast and slow passages and, in particular, a radio mast. Since wireless bike computers often had problems with interference signals in the past, we also put modern devices to the test and found that one or the other bike computer is still affected by interference signals. We also check the menu navigation on our round of tests: The same applies here as to the setup – some devices can be operated intuitively, while others only require thorough reading of the instructions.
