Market: The Lake Constance area (with the Bodo, Naldo and DING associations), the greater Frankfurt area (RMV), the Fugger city of Augsburg (Stadtwerke Augsburg) and the Rhine-Neckar region (VRN) have had one thing in common since 2014: they belong the meanwhile 10 cities and regions that participate in the Tern traffic projects with the respective ADFC national associations.
The pilot project started in Munich in April 2011 with the aim of combining the two sustainable and environmentally friendly modes of transport, bicycle and public transport, into a seamless mobility chain.
However, this connection was not always possible due to blocking times or a general ban on taking people with you.
After the successful start in the Bavarian state capital, other transport and tariff associations supported the joint project in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Bremen, Münster and Karlsruhe.
The nationwide significance of the project has increased even further thanks to these additional partner cities. With Hamburg and Munich, 2 of the 3 largest German cities are already on board, plus Frankfurt / Main as a major international hub. The transport associations involved bring it to almost 3 billion passengers per year. This corresponds to more than 30 percent of the almost 10 billion passengers throughout Germany. In southern Germany, almost all of the major regions are now involved – which makes it clear: the Tern transport projects have arrived in Germany, are accepted and, despite their relatively short duration, are already very widely spread.
The cooperation was suggested by the regional groups of the German cycling association ADFC. The advantages of a folding bike were reconciled with the legal possibilities of taking a bike on local public transport.
“The combination of bicycle and public transport is ideal for urban areas. The regions participating in the folding bike project are already treading a path of the future.", confirms Burkhard Stork, ADFC General Manager. Through a network of specialist dealers in the respective catchment areas, Tern offers selected special models that can be purchased at limited special prices with additional services. Free transport, even during rush hours, is expressly permitted on all means of transport in the tariff network.
The currently 10 participating cities and regions are only an interim result, as other large cities and regions will be added.
