cycling: GP di Camaiore: Diego Ulissi with the staying power

March 6, 2014 by the editorial office

ulissi

Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) won the Italian spring classic GP di Camaiore. In the sprint he prevailed against Matteo Montaguti (Ag2R-La Mondiale) and Julian Arredondo (Trek Factory Racing).

The race was initially characterized by a breakaway group led by Dutchman Johnny Hoogerland. Together with his flight companions, he was able to show a lead of more than seven minutes. After that, however, Astana's pace diktat showed success. After the group was caught on the last climb before the finish, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) attacked first. However, he was trumped by Ulissi, Arredondo, Montaguti and Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge). The quartet managed to keep the field at a distance on the descent to the finish in Camaiore. There Ulissi had the longer breath.

Due to the victory, the 24-year-old Ulissi should also be one of the favorites for the upcoming Strade Bianche on Saturday. The race will also be held in Tuscany.
