cycling: GP La Marseillaise: Belgian Vanbilsen wins French season opener

2. February 2014 by the editorial office

vanbilsen

Belgian Kenneth Vanbilsen (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) won the GP La Marseillaise in the sprint. The other places were occupied by Baptiste Planckaert (Roubaix Lille Métropole) and Samuel Dumoulin (Ag2R-La Mondiale).

The race, which also marks the start of the French season, attracted a large number of well-known drivers, including John degenkolb (Giant-Shimano), who finished fourth. At first, four outliers determined what happened: Frédéric Brun, Brice Feillu, Alexis Gougeard and Thomas Vaubourzeix had a lead of 5:40 minutes, but were caught with almost fifty kilometers to go. After that tried Mikaël Cherel his luck. He went into the final kilometers with a lead of 1:20 minutes, but was sent off the field just before the finish line.
