Barely a year after former UCI President McQuaid had the work of the Commission to deal with the doping past stopped, Brian Cookson reopened an office that will deal with the issues that were shelved at the time.
“The commission will investigate the problems in cycling over the past few years, particularly the extent to which the UCI was involved in the misconduct. Its work will also focus on what went wrong in our sport and it will make recommendations for changes so that, as far as possible, we do not repeat these mistakes ,” said Cookson regarding the new commission.
The Cycling Independent Reform Commission ( CIRC ) consists of three members and includes Swiss politician and former prosecutor Dick Marty, whose background is in combating organized crime and drug abuse. He is joined by CAS arbitrator Ulrich Haas and former Australian military officer and criminal investigation specialist Peter Nicholson.
According to Cookson, the commission has already started preparatory work and will have full access to the UCI data in the coming days. His goal of making the UCI a more transparent, more trustworthy and more modern organization, which he had already announced before the election, seems a lot closer.
