Barely a year after former UCI President McQuaid had the work of the Commission to deal with the doping past stopped, Brian Cookson reopened an office that will deal with the issues that were shelved at the time.
"The Commission will investigate the problems facing cycling in recent years, particularly how the UCI was implicated in the wrongdoing. Their work will also be focused on what went wrong in our sport and they will make recommendations for changes so that, as much as possible, we do not repeat those mistakes.", said Cookson regarding the new Commission.
The Cycling Independent Reform Commission, short CIRC, consists of three members and will be cast with Swiss politician and former prosecutor Dick Marty, whose background is in the fight against organized crime and drug abuse. He will be assisted by CAS referee Ulrich Haas and former Australian military officer and criminal investigations specialist Peter Nicholson.
According to Cookson, the commission has already started preparatory work and will have full access to the UCI data in the coming days. His goal of making the UCI a more transparent, more trustworthy and more modern organization, which he had already announced before the election, seems a lot closer.
