Last Saturday I went to beautiful Prague for the Arkady Downmall, a race across a shopping mall. Drops, escalators, doubles and a big finish jump, the track had everything that was fun to offer. In addition, the Czechs are absolute bike maniacs and so almost 5000 spectators cheered them on at the top of their lungs.
The driven mode was simple: Everyone drives individually. After the first run, the top 15 advance, after the second run the top 10. They then carry out the final. Unfortunately, I was only able to complete three training runs, but I improved from run to run in the individual runs, so that I was able to fight my way to the final.
The atmosphere was unique. You drove through the huge crowd, were cheered on and still completely focused on the track. People wanted to high five, autograph and even take photos with you. As a driver you felt a bit like a Hollywood star.
In the final I started first and had a really good run to the finish. One by one the other guys drove and I had to watch them try to beat my time. Some succeeded, some luckily didn't. In the end it was enough for sixth place, which I'm super happy about.
The organizer must be given a big compliment. Bringing the sport to the city and hosting an event like this is the best publicity there is for the sport. I'm already looking forward to next year.
