cycling: Sir Bradley Wiggins receives official accolade

10 December 2013 by the editorial office

The Brit Sir Bradley Wiggins (Sky) was officially knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in London today. In an interview he gave afterwards, he was impressed by the atmosphere, albeit a little irritated. "It's weird being honored as an athlete with all these veterans in the same room", according to Wiggins. He has held the title of nobility since autumn of last year. He received this for his sporting merits, which include victory in the Tour de France and gold at the Olympic Games in London.

In the further course of the interview, he left no doubt that sport is more his profession. "I want to do the Tour de France again next year and get back in a form similar to 2012", said Wiggins, who did not comment on his relationship with Chris Froome (Sky) in this context. “But my long-term goal is the games in Rio. I want to get a fifth Olympic gold medal there.” Aiming high for a rider whose current season has been marred by injuries and disappointments.
