Ireland's Nicolas Roche (Saxo-Tinkoff) loses the red jersey after just one day. The new overall leader of the Tour of Spain is the Spaniard Daniel Moreno (Katusha), who was able to put on the coveted bib thanks to his victory on the day. He is now one second ahead of Roche in the overall standings.
The final climb to Valdepeñas de Jaén, which was up to 163 percent steep, was the decisive factor in the 26-kilometre ninth stage. In the heart of Andalusia, the tour favorites presented themselves again in top form. Moreno only attacked with 700 meters to go, but was able to break away decisively from Roche, Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar). It was possible to keep the distance to the finish small. However, Moreno managed to cross the line exactly eight seconds ahead of the Irishman, taking the lead from him by just one second.
# Alejandro Valverde and Joaquim Rodriguez followed in second and third place.
