After the young Slovenian Matej Mohoric had already won silver and gold at the Junior World Championships last year, he crowned this year's season by winning the U23 World Championships. Mohoric drove a very clever race. After being in the peloton for the first five of seven laps, he steadily worked his way up the field and played the remaining laps in an almost unchallenged solo.
Especially on the technically demanding sections, the Slovenian was able to pull away and temporarily gain a lead of 28 seconds. Only the South African Louis Meintjes was able to approach on the steep climb of the Via Salvati, but did not manage to completely close the gap.
After a total distance of 172,3 kilometers, Mohoric finished with a time of 4:20:18 hours. Meintjes followed him only three seconds behind and thus secured silver. Third place was decided in a sprint by the first chasing group. The Norwegian Sondre H. Enger was able to secure the bronze medal with an early start. The German U23 champion Silvio Herklotz finished at the same time as Enger and secured eighth place. Briton Simon Yates, who was favored before the race, went away empty-handed.
Those who missed the race can relive the decisive moments in this video.
