Milan – Sanremo: Mohoric wins thanks to his downhill skills

March 19, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Cycling Highlights Monuments

Cycling: Matej Mohoric has won Milan – Sanremo for the first time in his career. The Slovenian attacked on the Poggio descent and couldn't be caught after that. Before that, his compatriot Tadej Pogacar tried to get away as a soloist several times – in vain.

Mohoric Milan Sanremo

Mohoric closes the gap and races to victory

Thanks to his downhill skills Matej Mohoric (Bahrain – Victorious) won the Monument Milan – Sanremo. The Slovenian was initially instrumental in the fact that the four riders who had escaped were finally caught on the Poggio descent. Then he just kept going and drove coldly away from all his companions. In the flat section that followed, he could not be caught again. Second place goes to the French Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) in front of the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix).

UAE revolutionizes Milan – Sanremo

Rarely has Milan – Sanremo been really exciting before Poggio. A few attacks in the small climbs before that added some spice, but not the big action. UAE Team Emirates should change that this year. Tadej pogacar (UAE) sent his helpers forward in the Cipressa and let them go full throttle with around 250 kilometers in their legs. Above all Davide formolo (UAE) played a large part in the fact that the peloton shrank down to around 30 men in no time. The breakaway group – only of that anyway Samuel Rivi (Eolo – comet) and Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani – CSF – Faizanè) were left – didn't stand a chance. Among other things, the co-favorites were also left behind in the main field Fabio Jacobsen (Quick Step Alpha Vinyl), tom pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers) and Peter Sagan (Total Energies). Although we have to give credit to the latter that he dropped back due to a breakdown.

Pogacar just can't get away

The little game continued up the Poggio. Diego Ulissi (UAE) forced for its captain Tadej pogacar (UAE) the pace. Then the Slovenian tour winner attacked. Once, twice, three times, four times - but he just couldn't get away. In between also stepped Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) and Soren Kragh Andersen (DSM) on. The last-named was then actually able to climb up shortly before the crest together with Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) and wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) put something down. However, in the downhill led Matej Mohoric (Bahrain – Victorious) the chasing group approached again. But the Slovenian didn't have enough. He pulled through and was able to break away from his companions by a few seconds on the descent. Behind them there was disagreement in the last kilometers, so that Matej Mohoric was able to choose the winner of Milan - Sanremo.
