Like last year, Tony Martin led his team Omega Pharma-QuickStep to the title in the team time trial. However, before the races, hardly anyone would have expected the strong performance of the Orica-GreenEdge team that they had to settle for second place, only 0.81 seconds behind. Third place went to Team Sky with Tour de France winner Chris Froome.
The Belgian team Omega Pharma-QuickStep was fast right from the start. The team was already ahead at the first split, shortly after the start in Montecatini Terme. The same picture was presented to the other two intermediate times. However, it also became clear that the other two teams mentioned were moving fast and the Australians in particular turned up the heat towards the end of the 56.8-kilometre distance to Florence. In the end, Omega Pharma-QuickStep needed 1:04:16 hours for its title run and can therefore look forward to a successful title defense.
