Cycling: Nico Denz has won the twelfth stage of the Giro d'Italia. The German was part of a breakaway group of more than 20 men and finally got the upper hand in the final sprint of a trio.
Nico Denz fights like a lion
Rain again. Again, a runaway wins. On the 185 km long route from Bra to Rivoli a breakaway group of more than 20 men was able to break away from the main field and decide the day's victory among themselves. Among others, the Austrian was there Patrick Conrad (Bora – hansgrohe) and the three Germans Nico Denz (Bora – hansgrohe), Michel Hessmann (Jumbo – Visma) and Jasha Sutterlin (Bahrain-Victorious). Since the escape group did not harmonize despite a lead of several minutes, there were isolated attacks again and again. A quartet was able to turn around well before the final climb Nico Denz (Bora – hansgrohe), Sebastian Berwick (Israel – Premier Tech), Tom's Skujins (Trek – Segafredo) and Alessandro Tonelli (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) detach from their companions. In the final climb, the last-named Italian finally had to give up.
Two German stage wins in a row
The leading trio drove together over the crest of Colle Braida. Now it was clear: These three will make up the day's victory among themselves. Because the chasing group was more than three minutes behind. And there was no danger from the main field either. As expected, there were no attacks among the top favorites. Twelve kilometers from the finish Nico Denz his attack. Sebastian Berwick couldn't follow at first, but caught up later. From then on, the Australian refused to cooperate. Further attacks did not follow. So it came to a three-point sprint in which Berwick had no chance. Denz had to do the sprint from the front, since Tom's Skujins didn't want to drive by anymore. But the German was not surprised and continued his sprint to the finish line. Even before his stage win at the Tour de Suisse last year, this day's win for Denz is definitely the greatest success of his career to date. In 2018 he was already second on a Giro stage. Now he can finally look forward to his really big victory in a Grand Tour.
