Cycling: Wout van Aert has won the eighth stage of the Tour de France. In the end, the Belgian was faster than Michael Matthews in Lausanne. Tadej Pogacar easily defended his yellow jersey in third place.
Van Aert takes his second stage win
Second again: Michael Matthews (BikeExchange – Jayco) was only just beaten on the eighth stage of the Tour de France. The Australian was against wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) lost in the sprint for the day's win. The Belgian can be happy about his second stage win. He continues to extend his lead in the points classification. Tadej pogacar (UAE) was again in top form with third place after 186,3 kilometers from Dole to Lausanne.
Only three outliers
Somewhat surprisingly, only three drivers were able to break away from the peloton after the start. The Italian Mattia Cattaneo (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), the Brit Fred Wright (Bahrain – Victorious) and the Belgian Frederic Frison (Lotto – Soudal) benefited from a big crash around Peloton with a lead of just ten seconds. This quickly widened the gap to over a minute and the trio was accepted as the group of the day. But they probably never had a chance of winning the day, because in the main field the teams Jumbo - Visma and BikeExchange - Jayco worked on a mass finish.
Mass fall at the beginning of the stage
Shortly after the start of today's eighth stage of the Tour de France over 186,3 kilometers from Dole to Lausanne, there was a mass crash. Kevin Marks (DSM) caught up with the man in front while riding at the very front of the peloton and brought almost the entire peloton down or at least to a standstill. Among other things, it also got caught Nairo Quintana (Arkea – Samsic), Peter Sagan (Total Energies), Maximilian schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) and david gaudu (Groupama – FDJ). Also Ben O'Connor (Ag2r – Citröen) fell again. With the exception of Kevin Vermaerke, all the pros who fell here were able to continue the race.
First drivers out because of Corona
It took until the eighth stage for the first riders to leave the Tour de France due to the corona virus. The French got it Geoffrey Bouchard (Ag2r – Citröen) and the Norwegian Vegard stake lengths (UAE). Previously, only Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl and Jumbo – Visma supervisors tested positive. At the Tour de Suisse a few weeks ago, we saw how quickly it can hit the field of riders. Spicy: drove after his stage win yesterday Tadej pogacar (UAE) jubilantly past the spectators and got high fives. No trace of special caution because of the corona virus. Now it has caught one of his teammates. The Tour de France lasts more than two weeks - and the worries go with it.
Geoffrey Bouchard:
“I didn't feel good during yesterday's stage. It's a big disappointment for me because now my favorite terrain would have started.”
