Cycling: David Gaudu has won the second stage of the Volta ao Algarve. The Frenchman prevailed in a turbulent uphill sprint ahead of Samuele Battistella. A few meters before the finish line there was one of numerous falls.
Ineos Grenadiers take command
From Albufeira to Fóia (Monchique), the professionals had to cover 182,4 kilometers on the second stage of the Volta ao Algarve. Unfortunately, there were numerous falls and abandonments today as well. Nils Politt (Bora – hansgrohe) got out as well as Jon Izagirre (Cofidis). The overall leader and yesterday's stage winner Fabio Jacobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was shaken off the peloton early on due to the challenging terrain. The Ineos Grenadiers team pushed the pace enormously in the mountains. Among other things, Geraint Thomas was responsible for the tempo work. Especially on the last 20 kilometers - when the two final climbs went up - this ensured a far-reaching selection in the peloton. The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team also showed up frequently in the wind.
Gaudu wins after preliminary work by Küng
In the last two kilometers came suddenly Stefan Kung (Groupama – FDJ) forward. The Swiss prepared an attack for his teammate david gaudu (Groupama – FDJ) before. But it was Samuele Battistella (Astana), who opened the sprint in the final meters. On the left collided Sergio Higuita (Bora – hansgrohe) and Tobias Foss (Jumbo - Visma). As a result, the Colombian champions and the Norwegian champions fell. The day's win went to Frenchman David Gaudu - so Stefan Küng's preliminary work paid off. The German George Zimmerman (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) finished eighth.
