Cycling: Tomorrow in Carcassonne there will be a mass sprint decision. Can Mark Cavendish claim his 34th Tour stage win and level with Eddy Merckx?
Mass sprint in Carcassonne
After the breakaways were allowed to decide the stage win among themselves today, it will be the sprinters' turn again tomorrow. The 219,9 kilometer section from Nîmes to Carcassonne will end in a mass sprint. On the flat stage there is only one mountain classification of the fourth category to master. Therefore, for the first time in Tour de France history, there will be a sprint decision at the foot of the towers of Carcassonne.
The key moments of the 13st stage
- Sharp start in Nimes at 12:15
- Mountain classification 4th category: Côte du Pic Saint-Loup (5,5 km a 3,6 km) 168,4 km / 51,5 km
- Sprint classification in Fontes 115,7 km / 104,2 km
- Arrival in Carcassonne between 17:15 and 17:45
Velomotion Prognosis: Cavendish claims his fourth stage win
Although another break will try to beat the sprinter teams tomorrow, there will be a bunch sprint in Carcassonne. The interests of the respective teams are far too great for the stage victory on this flat section to be given away. Most notably Mark Cavendish should be interested in arriving together. The Briton now has 33 stage victories in the Tour de France and is only one stage win behind Eddy Merckx. It could be tomorrow - and that in front of such a wonderful backdrop. Carcassonne is the perfect location for the record. We're betting on a tight bunch sprint, but because the Deceuninck – Quick-Step team prepares the sprint so perfectly, we see Mark Cavendish racing across the finish line jubilantly.
