Cycling: The Giro d'Italia 2021 is history. Egan Bernal of Colombia emerges as the winner of the 104th edition. His Italian teammate and world champion Filippo Ganna won the final time trial despite a puncture. The German Max Walscheid was a strong sixth.
Ganna also wins the second time trial
Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) has now also won the final stage of the Giro d'Italia after the opening time trial three weeks ago. The Italian completed the 30,3-kilometer course from Senago to Milan in a time of 33:48, 12 seconds faster than the Frenchman Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck - Quick Step). The Italians came third on the day Edward Affini (Jumbo - Visma). The result could have looked completely different, since some curiosities influenced the result.
Breakdowns, falls & support vehicles in the way
Filippo Gana suffered a rear wheel failure with 1.300 meters to go and had to change bikes. Remi Cavagna was therefore a little later on course for the best time, but had an absolute blackout himself. The French champion missteered completely in the last corner, causing him to fall. The fourth of the day Matteo Sobrero (Astana – Premier Tech) was held up on the last kilometer by support vehicles that were standing around or moving very slowly. Luckily the German was spared from these misfortunes Max Walscheid (Qhubeka – Assos), who can look forward to rank 6 as a result.
Bernal celebrates overall victory
Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), as expected, won the overall victory. Complete the podium at this year's Giro d'Italia Damian Caruso (Bahrain – Victorious) and Simon yates (Bike Exchange). Egan Bernal has won his second Grand Tour after the Tour de France in 2019. The still only 24-year-old dominated the first two weeks, but then revealed his first weaknesses in the high mountains. Ultimately, thanks to his strong team, he stayed in the Maglia Rosa and won the tour with ease.
