Cycling: Finally, the Germans have their first stage win in the Tour de France 2020. Lennard Kämna broke away from a breakaway group and crossed the finish line as a soloist. Among other things, he left Giro winner Richard Carapaz standing.
All corona tests on the second day of rest negative
156 riders made their way to Villard-de-Lans today after the start in La Tour-du-Pin. The 164,0 kilometer long 16th stage of the Tour de France all professionals still in the race could tackle it, since all corona tests on second rest day have turned out negative. Employees of the teams and the organization did not give a positive test either. Because the test by tour boss Christian Prudhomme was negative this time, he was again allowed to announce the sharp start from his red car with the flag. And then, as expected, things got straight to the point. First, more than 30 men were able to break away from the main field. As however William Martin (Cofidis) tried to jump after, reacted Jumbo - Visma and collected everyone again. Only after many kilometers did the group of the day finally form.

Martin's courageous attack fails
The 13 escapees were awarded a lead of more than 23 minutes. Jumbo - Visma controlled the pace but didn't really follow. It quickly became clear that the winner of the day would come from the top group. The favorites themselves should not really attack each other. Only William Martin (Cofidis) tried together with his team-mate Nicholas Edett (Cofidis) from the peloton. But this advance was also neutralized by the yellow-black train a few kilometers later.
Rolland is getting closer and closer to the mountain jersey
From the leading group secured himself Pierre Roland numerous mountain points. The dotted jersey from Leader Benoit Cosnefroy He hasn't won (AG2R La Mondiale) today but got in wait now. Later, his teammate tried his hand Quentin Pacher as a soloist. However, a group of four was able to catch up with him up the Montée de Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte. This existed alongside the German Lennard Kamna and the Swiss Sebastian Reichenbach from Richard Carapaz and Julian Alaphilippe.
Kämna leaves them all and wins in Villard-de-Lans
After further tightening of the pace from Richard Carapaz the two Frenchmen - Alaphilippe and Pacher - finally had to let go. Just before the crest sat down Lennard Kamna one more. The German distanced Giro winner Richard Carapaz and Sebastien Reichenbach, so that for the last 20 kilometers or so everyone was alone. And the 24-year-old couldn't be caught anymore. As a good time trialist, he used his advantages over his pursuers on the flat and crossed the finish line first. The Germans are thus celebrating their first stage win in the 2020 Tour de France. Also strong: the Swiss Sebastian Reichenbach comes third, the German Simon Geschke Fifth.
