Spectrum: The Kidical Mass campaign, founded in 2008 in Oregon, USA, is committed to child-safe cycle paths. In Germany, the first demos started three years ago, and nationwide family bike demos are planned for 2020 in over 90 cities. With the action weekend on September 19th and 20th, the Kidical Mass will take place for the first time throughout Germany.
The days of action initiated by Kidical Mass Cologne had already been announced for March, but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But on September 19th and 20th, 2020, the time has come: children, young people and families will demonstrate on bikes for safer school bike paths. A new transport policy is required so that children can cycle safely and independently in the cities. The campaign weekend is supported and organized by the ADFC cycling club, Campact, Changing Cities, Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk, Greenpeace, RADKOMM, VCD and more than 150 regional initiatives. The initiators expressly point out that the demos will of course be carried out in compliance with hygiene measures.
Kidical Mass: ADFC bicycle climate test confirms bad conditions for cycling
In the ADFC bicycle climate test with over 170.000 respondents, 74 percent stated that it was only with a bad feeling that children could be allowed to ride alone. An alarming value that is even more devastating in the big cities: Here it is 85 percent. According to statistics from the Federal Ministry of Transport, 43 percent of children are now brought to school by car. This compares to just 28 percent in the Netherlands. ADFC Vice President Rebecca Peters comments: "A good city is one in which children happily cycle or walk to school - and parents support this with a good feeling. Unfortunately, this is the exception in Germany. Dangerous ways to school must finally come to an end - we need roads suitable for children throughout the country!"
More than 100 bicycle demos have been announced in over 90 cities. The list of all campaign locations can be found on the information page of the initiative https://kinderaufsrad.org/aktionsbuendnis/#aktionsorte
