Cycling: Julian Alaphilippe scored a double at the Tour de France. The Frenchman won stage two and claimed the yellow jersey.
Trentin fights for green and is unlucky
After the fall festival on the first stage, three riders were unable to continue the Tour de France today. John Degenkolb (Lotto – Soudal), Philip Gilbert (Lotto – Soudal) and Rafael Valls (Bahrain – McLaren) are out. So only 173 riders started the second part over 186,0 kilometers with start and finish in Nice. Eight of them formed the breakaway group of the day - at least at the beginning. Then Matteo Trentin (CCC) won the intermediate sprint Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe), but then had to drop back into the peloton due to a puncture. So the three-time world champion was still with his Austrian teammate Lukas Postlberger (Bora – hansgrohe), his compatriot Michael Gogl (NTT), the Danish Champion Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), the Latvian Tom's Skujins (Trek – Segafredo), as well as the two French Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) and Anthony Perez (Cofidis) together in the escape group.
The Col de Turini is too difficult for Sagan
had a difficult day david gaudu (Groupama – FDJ) in front of him. The noble helper of Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) fell back right after the sharp start and was treated by the race doctor. Meanwhile, the entire UAE team was excited for leaders Tadej pogacar and the overall leader alexander kristoff to the front of the field. They kept the pace high so as not to give the escapees too much of a lead. Jumbo - Visma was also involved at times. The distance never exceeded the 4-minute mark. During the mountain classification at the Col de la Colmiane Benoit Cosnefroy in Anthony Perez went, the result turned around at the Col de Turini. After peter sagan, was asked shortly after the summit, so did the rest of the group in the Col d'Èze 40,0 kilometers from the finish.
Alaphilippe, Hirschi & Yates attack
In the Col d'Èze Deceuninck - Quick-Step, then Jumbo - Visma took over the command. Due to the speed dictate, some classification drivers had to bury all their dreams of a good placement. Among other things, fell Tiesj Benoot (Sunweb), Daniel Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Wout poels (Bahrain – McLaren) back. Daniel Martinez (EF) fell on the descent and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) had a puncture. But both were able to reconnect. In the final climb Quatre Chemins, Deceuninck – Quick-Step first forced the pace in person Bob Jungels, later Julian attacked Alaphilippe. At first, only the Swiss could follow the Frenchman Marc Hirschi (Sunweb). Shortly thereafter, the Briton jumped Adam Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) also ahead.
Hirschi only narrowly loses against Alaphilippe
Although the gap was consistently only around 20 seconds, the decimated peloton was unable to reestablish contact. The trio worked well together until the devil's rag, but then started playing tactical games. The lead was gone - but not the stage win. Adam Yates started the sprint Julian Alaphilippe passed. Marc Hirschi had the perfect rear wheel, but the Swiss was a few centimeters short at the end. Julian Alaphilippe will start tomorrow in the yellow jersey. Although the 28-year-old has experienced so much in his career, he was overwhelmed by emotions in the finish area. Bursting into tears, he rejoiced at his successful double strike.
