Cycling: Richie Porte (Trek – Segafredo) has won the third stage of the Tour Down Under and thus taken the lead in the general classification. The Australian repeated his victory from 2017 and has the best chance of winning the ocher jersey again. Simon Geschke (CCC) also presented himself strongly up to Paracombe.
Chanceless breakaway trio
Crunch time at the Tour Down Under! The third stage of the Tour of Australia should cause the first major changes in the overall standings. On the 131,0 kilometer section from Unley to Paracombe, many bumpy sections had to be completed. The pros crossed the finish line in Paracombe – a small town near Adelaide – five times. But before that happened, the first breakaway group formed as usual today. The trio, consisting of the French Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R La Mondiale), the Canadian Guillaume Boivin (Israel Start-Up Nation) and the Australian Miles Scotson (Groupama – FDJ), was at least allowed to make up the sprint rankings among themselves. As expected, however, they were unable to intervene in the battle for the day's victory.
Porte wins, Geschke strong
9,0 kilometers from the finish was in person Miles Scotson the last outlier. The race for the day's victory - and also for the overall ranking - started all over again. But not for Jay McCarthy (Bora – hansgrohe). The Australian fell shortly before catching up and was thus eliminated prematurely as a possible candidate for victory. As the 9,3 percent steep and final Torrens Hill began, the climbers and punchers took charge. Surprisingly early Richie porte (Trek – Segafredo) out of the saddle. The Australian won here in Paracombe in 2017. And this time, too, there was no getting around him. Reached five seconds behind him RobPower (Sunweb) ranked second Simon yates (Mitchelton – Scott) and other drivers from the chasing group. The German was one of them Simon Geschke (CCC), who thus remains within striking distance in the overall standings. However, the new leader is Richie Porte, six seconds ahead Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott).
Absolutely DOMINANT.
