Test: In its Citec 8000 Ultra series, the German wheel manufacturer Citec offers the world's lightest 80mm high clincher full carbon wheel set, which also promises the best aerodynamics at a low weight. We were all the more excited when we got the speedsters to test.
Citec 8000 Ultra – The lightest 80mm clincher in the world
The data speaks for itself: The new full carbon system wheelset, which weighs only 80 grams with a rim height of 1495 mm, is the lightest 80 mm high clincher full carbon wheelset in the world. Due to the super light weight in relation to the rim height and the excellent aerodynamics of the high profile construction, these high-tech full carbon system wheels are ideal for competitions, as well as time trials and triathlon competitions. Integrated aluminum brake flanks should ensure optimal braking behavior even in wet conditions. The rims are optimized with carbon knife spokes and high-flange carbon hubs.

Citec 8000 Ultra review
So much for the theory, which admittedly sounds very promising. The first impression when the test set arrived was very convincing, because our test combination with 63mm at the front and 80mm at the rear from the Citec 8000 Ultra is a real eye-catcher. The bladed spokes and their arrangement in particular make a good impression and should also bring aerodynamic advantages. Here, too, the Citec 8000 Ultra can convince all along the line, because you can feel the propulsion not only at high speeds, but also on normal training rides with the same performance you are around 3 km/h faster (on average), which is impressive. But the 8000 Ultras can not only be used on flat terrain, but the bullets also perform well uphill. According to the manufacturer, it is not for nothing that they are the lightest 80mm clinchers in the world.
A very practical alternative to the now common carbon braking surfaces are the integrated aluminum braking surfaces, which allow the Citec 8000 Ultra to offer very good braking properties even in wet conditions. Unfortunately, during our test rides, we increasingly found that the wheels are susceptible to side winds. Of course, at 63 or 80mm, they are not exactly the lowest wheelsets on the market, but the side wind is noticeable. On straight sections, however, this can be controlled well.
