Cycling: Just six days before the start of the Tour de France, the case of Chris Froome (Sky) is making waves again. The ASO will not allow the four-time winner to enter. Team Sky is now going to an arbitral tribunal. A decision is expected on Tuesday.
Chris Froome is banned from starting by the ASO
It was to be expected that the Chris Froome case would be hotly debated ahead of the start of the 105th Tour de France. However, the fact that there will be a short-term ban on the start and a hearing before the arbitral tribunal of the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF) is unlikely. But that's how it's going to be for now. Like the French newspaper Le Monde namely reported today, the ASO has informed Chris Froome and his team Sky about issuing a starting ban. The organizers of the Tour de France refer to the ASO statutes.
Article 28 of the OSA statutes:
"The organizers expressly reserve the right to exclude a team or driver whose presence could damage the reputation or reputation of the tour."
Sky is counting on the take-off permission
Team Sky reacted immediately after the start ban was announced. Therefore, there will now be a hearing before the Arbitration Court of the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF). A decision is expected on Tuesday – just four days before the start of the 105th Tour de France. Team Sky is loud with the BBC meanwhile sure that Chris Froome can't be denied the start. The magazine cyclingnews.com quotes a Sky spokesman as saying "We are sure that he will be at the start."
In 2009, the ASO failed with a ban on Tom Boonen
Even though there has been a lot of speculation in the media over the past few months, nobody expected such drastic action by OSA. After all, the organizers had a bad experience with such a move nine years ago. At that time they wanted to ban Tom Boonen from the start. After an appeal by the team, the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF) banned a start ban. Tom Boonen was allowed to take part in the Tour de France and the ASO ban fizzled out. Will this also happen in the case of Chris Froome?
