Cycling: BMC won the opening time trial of Tirreno-Adriatico. For the team led by Rohan Dennis and Damiano Caruso, it was the third straight win in the Italian stage race. The teams from Mitchelton-Scott and Sky followed in second and third place. There was a moment of shock after a heavy fall by Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data), who apparently escaped without serious injuries.
Who would have thought? As in the two previous years, the winner of the opening time trial from Tirreno-Adriatico is BMC. The team around pacesetter and time trial specialist Rohan Dennis played to their full strength and lived up to their role as favourites. In the end, the US team completed the 21,5km four seconds faster than the Mitchelton-Scott competition, with Team Sky another five seconds behind.
The start of the Giro dress rehearsal went well for the German pros and teams: Sunweb was 25 seconds behind in 5th place. Tom Dumoulin, who was stricken with a cold, was not able to fully reproduce his top performance here. Katusha-Alpecin with Tony Martin and Marcel Kittel was able to achieve a good sixth place, BORA-hansgrohe an equally satisfactory seventh place.

Mark Cavendish, who fell at high speed and hit the asphalt with his head and face, caused a real moment of shock. A pothole on the sometimes very bad roads had probably brought the sprint veteran down. With a bloody face and a tattered one-piece suit, Cavendish rolled to the finish himself and without help. Whether he will start tomorrow, however, will only be decided in the evening.
