Cycling: An exciting Milan-Sanremo with a terrific Vincenzo Nibali was overshadowed by some heavy crashes this year. In addition to Mark Cavendish, who was at the start anyway with a broken rib from Tirreno-Adriatico, Andre Greipel and a few other drivers were also badly hit.
Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) has suffered a re-fractured rib, bruises and abrasions and a possible ankle ligament damage from his crash at Milan-Sanremo. The top sprinter crashed into a traffic divider at high speed ten kilometers before the Poggio and landed hard on his back after rolling over. Cavendish started in Milan with a leash anyway, as he had already broken a rib at Tirreno – Adriatico.
The German sprint hope Andre Greipel got it twice. As Greipel himself wrote on Twitter, he broke his collarbone yesterday in Milan – Sanremo and needs an operation. After a fall in the early stages, Andre Greipel fell again on the Poggio descent a few kilometers before the finish of the Italian spring classic. As did his teammate Jasper De Buyst, who shared that his front wheel slipped on the Poggio's descent, which ultimately led to the crash that also involved Greipel. With that, the classics season should already be over for the German sprinter, as he will need some time to return to the peloton after the operation.

Anthony Turgis and Guillaum Bonnafond were both affected by the accident involving Mark Cavendish. Turgis suffered a broken collarbone while Bonnafond finished the race with multiple contusions.
EF Education-First Drapac had three riders in crashes at once. Mitch Docker crashed in the feed zone along with Lukasz Wisniowski (Team Sky), both retiring from the race. In a later incident, Simon Clarke and Dan McLay crashed on a descent about 45 kilometers from the finish. Clarke hit a stone wall and shared on Twitter that he fractured 3 vertebrae in the process.
