Cycling: Chris Froome (Sky) has been making negative headlines for weeks. The Briton has now been nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Award – as Sportsman of the Year. In his category he competes against well-known top athletes.
Froome could be Sportsman of the Year
While cycling fans aren't too fond of Chris Froome, the Brit could soon be the recipient of a much-cherished award. The prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards will be presented in eight categories on February 27 in Monaco. For the rubric Sportsman of the Year Chris Froome was also nominated. In addition to his fourth Tour de France title, the 30-year-old also won the Vuelta a Espana in 2017. As winning two Grand Tours in one year is a rarity, it could be the Brit's first time to receive this accolade. But Froome has to deal with numerous top athletes in his category. So he would have to stand up against the tennis players, among other things Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer prevail, as well as against Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton or football star Cristiano Ronaldo. The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy will decide on the winners on February 27th.
Chris Froome nominated for Laureus Sportsman of the Year. It's getting crazier.

Armstrong won - and lost the award again
Despite his great successes in 2017, Chris Froome's chances of receiving an award are slim. The professional cyclist, who was born in Kenya, has had to deal with allegations of doping for weeks. Since the committees, as usual, take a lot of time with the punishment process, a decision by the end of February is unlikely. The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy have had bad experiences with the award of a cyclist. In 2002 was lance Armstrong in the same category in which Chris Froome has now been nominated. Armstrong had already received the Laureus Comeback of the Year Award in 2000. Since his achievements were canceled after his confession, Armstrong had to return his award. The same would probably happen to Chris Froome.
