Spectrum/Lifestyle: In a tragic fall during the Ski World Cup Super-G in Kvitfjell in March 2008, the Austrian Matthias Lanzinger lost his left lower leg. For many, the likeable athlete is still considered a role model, as he masters his fate with amazing composure. The e-bike also played an extremely important role for Matthias, as it allows him to spend a lot of time with his family in nature again.
Even during his active time in the Ski World Cup, Matthias Lanzinger was on the bike a lot in the pre-season. In the summer, initially on the racing bike for the long basic endurance units, and towards the autumn I increasingly use the mountain bike for the intensive units with intervals. Due to his accident, he was no longer able to use these opportunities as extensively as the residual limb was put under extreme strain. This is how Matthias discovered the e-bike for himself and can now count on an important partner in KTM.
Thanks to the e-bike, I can spend a lot of time with my family again and be with them in nature. That has always been very important to us and is now possible again despite the handicap. Now I can pull my daughter with the trailer or the trailer on the e-bike and my wife rides or hikes the same route with me. That has contributed immensely to my quality of life, because I can be everywhere again.
The e-bike is also used by Matthias Lanzinger to keep fit. Because of the motor support, he can choose his routes freely and also do his basic units on the mountain without having to switch to the much-used routes with the racing bike. "You're just very flexible. I adjust the support so that I can drive normally. As a result, I'm not faster than I used to be, but with over 20 pulse beats less and I have a good training effect," says Lanzinger.
In addition to tours with the family and the fitness aspect, the social factor made possible by the e-bike plays an important role.
There are many good cyclists in my circle of acquaintances and friends. The e-bike enables me to do many nice tours in a group in our area and thus also have a corresponding range of motion. Without the motor support, something like this would almost no longer be possible, because the load on the residual limb is then simply too high. I really enjoy this freedom of movement.
Tours of a good 60 kilometers and over 1500 meters in altitude are not uncommon, which is why the partnership with KTM is also important for Lanzinger in order to have a high-performance and high-quality e-bike.
For Matthias Lanzinger it is clear that the e-bike is also a great training opportunity for top athletes. Not only in rehab after injuries to get fit again for the season. But also as an integral part of basic training on the bike, the e-bike has many advantages to offer and allows great flexibility, since you can stay in your training areas regardless of the route profile if you adjust the support appropriately.
