Test: With the Spoon Flat Pedals, the US manufacturer Spank Industries offers a platform pedal in three different sizes. Contrary to the usual OneSize concept, the different pedal sizes enable a perfect individual "fit". All three models have a length of 105 mm, the width varies between 90 and 110 mm depending on the version. We tested the medium-sized Spank Spoon Flat Pedal 100, which is aimed at riders with a shoe size of 39 to 45.

Construction and design of the pedal
The CNC-optimized concave aluminum pedal body is up to 16 mm thick and rotates smoothly around a conical/hollow scandium steel axle. The large cut-outs in the pedal body and the rounded front and side edges are striking. Other features of the Spank Spoon Flat Pedal include cartridge bearings and sealed DU bushings. The inboard friction seal should not only prevent the ingress of dirt, but also prevent pedal spinning.
Before using the pedal for the first time, the pins must be screwed into the pedal body. Most of the pins are tapered Allen screws that protrude 5 mm after assembly. These pins are screwed from below with the supplied 3mm Allen key. In the axle area, a total of four pins, more precisely threaded rods, are screwed on - but no tools are included for this. After screwing in all the pins, the pair of pedals weighs a total of 400 grams.
Field test Spank Spoon Flat Pedals
The Spank Spoon Flat Pedal inspires when riding with a safe stand and very good grip. Should the weather change and the dry trail turn into a muddy track, this can be seen absolutely easily - at least from the pedal's point of view. The grip on the pedal with the 5 mm protruding pins is exemplary even in wet conditions, thanks to the large cut-outs, even mud and mud cannot reduce the safe driving experience. The concave design in turn contributes to the convincing driving experience.
Thanks to the rounded front and side edges, snagging on roots and stones is minimized. Even with the roughest action, the foot sits as if nailed to the pedal. If your foot does slip, you have to clench your teeth: the contact between the pedal and the shin or calf can be very painful. Irrespective of this, the pedal is recommended for all riders who demand maximum performance from their pedal on the trail: power transmission and pedaling feel are first-class, as is the grip.
After the test
The Spank Spoon Flat Pedal only shows the usual signs of wear, otherwise the platform pedal is visibly unimpressed by the test. Despite the sometimes miserable weather conditions, we couldn't find any damage or weak points on the bearings and seals after the test.
