Cycling: Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) will hang up his cycling shoes after this year's Vuelta a Espana. The decision was not easy for him, but he thinks the timing is right. Most recently, Contador had trouble keeping up with the leaders in the big tours.
Goodbye Alberto Contador! After the Vuelta, professional cycling is (for the time being?) over for the 34-year-old Spaniard. El Pistolero - as he is known to his fans - had become the fifth rider in the history of the sport to achieve the feat of winning the overall standings in all three Grand Tours. His last great success was the 2015 Giro, after which he gradually had to realize that it was no longer quite enough to be able to ride at the top of the world. After the end of Team Tinkoff, he joined Trek Segafredo for a year, for which he most recently competed in the Tour de France, finishing ninth.
“I will be riding the upcoming Vuelta starting August 19 […] and it will be my last race as a professional cyclist.
I say that with a smile on my face and without melancholy. I thought about it a lot and I don't think there is a better stage for my farewell than the race in my home country. I'm sure it's going to be a great few weeks, I'll enjoy the jubilation one last time and can't wait to get started."
