News in brief: The next big name is leaving this year's Tour de France. After the second rest day and before the crucial third week, Philippe Gilbert has to retire. As his team Quick-Step Floors announced via Twitter, a gastrointestinal infection made it impossible for the Belgian veteran to continue.
The rollercoaster ride in Philippe Gilbert's season continues. After moving to Quick-Step Floors, the Belgian seemed to have regained his old strength at the beginning of the year and, in addition to the Tour of Flanders, also won the Amstel Gold Race despite a fall. There, however, he suffered a ruptured kidney, which forced him to take a long break. In the end, however, he was able to compete in the Tour for the first time since 2013, where he was denied a day's success, but was one of the most active riders, especially in the first week.
sad news: @PhilippeGilbert won't start today's #TDF2017 stage due to a viral gastroenteritis. We wish you health and a fast recovery, Phil!
