Cycling: Tomorrow the Tour de France 2017 presents its final act. As always, the stage winner will be crowned on the Champs-Elysées. After Chris Froome (Sky) toasts with his teammates, a classic bunch sprint is expected after a chase. Can André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) still get his day's win?
The Tour de France also ends on the Champs-Elysées in 2017
After the Time Trial in Marseille the overall classification of the Tour de France 2017 is considered cemented. Chris Froome can look forward to the tour victory for the fourth time. But even if everything has already been decided in all classifications, tomorrow is still about what is probably the most important stage win of the year. Since Alexandre Vinokourov's coup in 2005, no driver has managed to avoid a mass sprint on the Champs-Elysées. A Sprint Royal can also be expected tomorrow, after the sprinter teams saved themselves a mass finish yesterday. The circuit on the Champs-Elysées is made for fast men. The streets are wide and the classification drivers stay out of it. It is quite possible that we will experience a functioning sprint train again.
Our tip: André Greipel grabs the hat trick on the Champs-Elysées
Since 2011, André Greipel has always finished in the top eight on the final stage of the Tour de France. In the past two years, the German has managed to win a stage in a mass sprint on the Champs-Elysées. The circuit seems to suit him and his troupe Lotto Soudal easily. Although things didn't go particularly well at the Tour de France this year, we believe André Greipel will be capable of a hat-trick tomorrow. Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) must be named as the biggest competitor. When it comes to speed, however, Greipel should be superior to the Norwegians. Alexander Kristoff (Katusha-Alpecin) and Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) also rather disappointed at this year's Tour de France. Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Michael Matthews (Sunweb) seemed to be stronger. We shouldn't completely ignore John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo), Rüdiger Selig (Bora-hansgrohe) and Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida). But if Lotto Soudal manages to get André Greipel into the perfect position, we'll see him cheering again on the final day of the Tour de France.
