Cycling: Chris Froome (Sky) will win the 104th edition of the Tour de France. The Brit defended his yellow jersey in today's time trial in Marseille. Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) pushed past Romain Bardet (Ag2r). The day's victory went somewhat surprisingly to Maciej Bodnar (Bora-hansgrohe). The two best Germans, Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) and Nikias Arndt (Sunweb), finished fourth and seventh, respectively, and the Swiss Stefan Küng was ninth.
The mountain was too hard for Tony Martin and Stefan Küng
At 13:50 p.m., Luke Rowe (Sky), the last-placed driver in the overall standings, was the first to roll off the starting ramp. However, it was Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac) who slammed the first significant benchmark time onto the asphalt. About halfway through the race he was undercut by Maciej Bodnar (Bora-hansgrohe). At that moment, no one suspected that the Pole would even win this time trial for the German WorldTour team. However, when Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) and Stefan Küng (BMC) couldn't match his performance, he too became aware of his chance of winning sitting in the hot seat. At the latest when top favorite Primoz Roglic had technical problems before the climb and was far behind, there was hope in the Bora-hansgrohe team.
Chris Froome dominates - Romain Bardet with jet black tag
Ironically, Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky) put his compatriot in distress. The Pole set a new personal best up on the mountain. However, he could not keep it until the finish line. He was missing a second. In addition to the stage win, the main focus today was the overall ranking. After Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) and Romain Bardet (Ag2r) were cheered for their start at the Marseille stadium, Chris Froome (Sky) whistled. But the Briton didn't let that bother him. Already at the first split he extended his lead. The timing at the top of the short climb then brought certainty. Chris Froome should be back in contention for the day's win while Romain Bardet was over a minute behind. He was also virtually overtaken by Rigoberto Uran.
Chris Froome & Maciej Bodnar celebrate
On the last few meters before entering the stadium, Romain Bardet even had to defend himself against overtaking Chris Froome. The Briton almost got the two minutes on the Frenchman. Furthermore, Bardet was in danger of slipping off the podium as Mikel Landa (Sky) was again strong today. In the end, Bardet saved himself from Froome. He was also able to keep Landa behind by a second. Uran celebrates his second place overall while Chris Froome will win the Tour de France for the fourth time. Happy also with the German team Bora-hansgrohe. With another stage win at the Tour de France, it worked out after all.
