Cycling: Fernando Gaviria was also able to win the 12th and at 229 km longest stage of this year's Giro d'Italia from Forlì to Reggio Emilia. After optimal preparatory work by his team Quickstep - Floors, the escapees were caught in time and Gaviria was able to demonstrate his sprint strength once again. The young German Phil Bauhaus (Team Sunweb) ended up on a good 4th place. Yesterday's winner Omar Fraile was able to secure the mountain jersey. Tom Dumoulin defended the Maglia Rosa.
Breakaway trio without a chance – Fraile takes over mountain jersey
A three-man lead group with Marco Marcato, Sergey Firsanov and the local hero Mirco Maestri dominated the race for long stretches. Due to an extremely fast finale, however, there was nothing to gain for the three breakaways, even a late attack by Maestri about 10 km from the finish ended shortly afterwards. The stage winner of the 11th Giro section Omar Fraile was able to secure further points in the mountain classification and thus take over the mountain jersey.
Despite the length of the 12th section, it was a rather quiet day for the drivers in the general classification. In the very fast final, the sprinter teams agreed and didn't give the breakaways a chance. Even a late attack by Eugert Zhupa from the Italian second division team Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia with 2 km to go caused little unrest. After perfect preliminary work by his teammates and especially by his driver Maximiliano Richeze, Gaviria was able to celebrate his third Giro stage win on his first Grand Tour. The German Grand Tour debutant Phil Bauhaus finished fourth and just missed the podium. Sam Bennett from the German team Bora - hansgrohe came third after good preliminary work by his team.
