Cycling: We saw nine stages at the Giro d'Italia 2017. It's not even half-time, but a lot has already happened - above all in the overall standings: Nairo Quintana (Movistar) set a real exclamation mark on the 9th stage yesterday. On the other hand, it was catastrophic for Team Sky: Geraint Thomas and Mikel Landa probably no longer play a role in the fight for overall victory. they were tripped by an escort motorcycle. What else happened at the Giro d'Italia? We briefly summarize.
Stage winners from Germany, Austria & Switzerland
No German-speaking driver will intervene in the battle for overall victory. Nevertheless, the cycling fans from Germany, Switzerland and Austria already had a lot to celebrate. The stage victories seemed to just fly to them in the first few days. After the Austrian Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-hansgrohe) died 1st stage surprisingly won, the German champion beat André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) in a mass sprint on the 2st stage to. Both pilots were allowed to present themselves in the pink jersey. After first rest day Silvan Dillier (BMC) then ensured a Swiss day's victory by sixth part could win as an outlier. A Slovenian was also happy: However, Luka Pibernik celebrated too early on the 5th stage and caused laughter around the world.

Sunday whirled the overall standings upside down
Things got serious for the class drivers for the first time on the 9th stage. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) set a real exclamation point at the difficult mountain finish at Blockhaus. With his appearances, the Colombian distanced himself from all his competitors. Only nine of 21 stages have been completed, but the way they did it left an almost unbeatable impression. Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) and Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) conceded 24 seconds, Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) 41 and last year's winner Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) exactly one minute. Behind them, the time gaps became ever greater, so that some of them can already say goodbye to the overall victory. Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo), for example, conceded almost three minutes, Bon Jungels (Quick-Step Floors) and Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) almost four minutes. It was even worse for Team Sky, which was classified as strong. Almost the entire team fell on the stage due to an escort motorcycle. Mikel Landa lost nearly 27 minutes with Geraint Thomas just over five.

The coming week at the Giro: Waiting before the grand finale?
The third week of the 100th Giro d'Italia will be tough. Five mountain stages then await the riders. But before the third rest day, there are still six sections on the program. It starts straight away on Tuesday with an almost 40-kilometer individual time trial from Foligno to Montefalco. Here Quintana's opponents have to put their cards on the table and make up time. The classification riders then only have to show up again on the 14th stage when it comes to the next mountain finish. We can also expect two mass sprints, where André Greipel will have to compete with the two-time stage winner Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors). So we can expect a lot of variety this Giro week.
