Cycling: Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) made the Giro d'Italia exciting again. As expected, the Dutchman won today's time trial over almost 40 kilometers from Foligno to Montefalco. He not only took the pink jersey from the previous overall leader Nairo Quintana (Movistar), but also almost three minutes.
Competition without a chance against Tom Dumoulin
On the bumpy course from Foligno to Montefalco, Tom Dumoulin was able to secure the stage win and the Maglia Rosa. After the Dutchman on the 9st stage already able to prove his good form, he now fought back against Nairo Quintana in terms of overall victory. The Dutch champion in the fight against the clock put a time of 50:37 on the road. Quintana went out to Dumoulin and was informed of his split times. But the Colombian couldn't resist the ever-growing deficit. The finish line was almost three minutes. He lost a whopping two minutes and 53 seconds - although he didn't deliver a bad race with 23rd place. Even Geraint Thomas (Sky) lost 49 seconds in second, Bob Jungels (Quick-Step Floors) 56 seconds and Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) 1:40 minutes. From fifth place the gap was already two minutes or more.
Even Tom Dumoulin was surprised - the overall ranking is pushed together
This formidable performance by Tom Dumoulin brings tension again in the fight for overall victory. After the 9th stage, many experts had already assumed that Nairo Quintana was unbeatable. Although it was known that Dumoulin is an outstanding time trialist, it was not to be expected that he would be able to take so much time from Quintana. Even Tom Dumoulin himself was surprised after the race: "I expected to make up time, but this much...?" Also due to the strong performances of the other competitors, the drivers have moved closer together in the overall classification. There are only 24 seconds between second Nairo Quintana and fifth Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida).
When will Nairo Quintana strike back?
Not much will happen in the coming days. On the 14th stage on Saturday and at the latest after the third rest day, Nairo Quintana will fight back in the mountains. Tom Dumoulin will try to defend himself and his Maglia Rosa. But he can also count on another time trial in the back of his mind. On May 28th, when the last act of the 100th Giro d'Italia is performed. From Monza to Milan there is then a distance of 29,3 kilometers, which clearly favors a roller like Dumoulin over Quintana.
