Richie Porte (BMC) secured overall victory at the Tour de Romandie with second place in today's time trial. When Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) won the day, the Australian Simon Yates (Orica-Scott) was still wearing the yellow jersey. Unfortunately, Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe) lost his third place overall in the Tour de Romandie. The German finished 2th in the final time trial and fell back to tenth place in the standings. Lennard Kämna (Sunweb) came in a strong eighth in the fight against the clock.
Richie Porte confirms his reputation
Before the start of the Tour de Romandie, most experts expected a duel between Chris Froome (Sky) and Richie Porte (BMC). Unfortunately it didn't come to that. Tour de France winner Chris Froome was not in good shape this week. Although he was tenth in today's time trial, this was only enough for an 18th place in the overall ranking. His former teammate Richie Porte was significantly stronger. The Australian finished second in yesterday's hilltop finish and today's final battle against the clock. Nevertheless, he was able to win the overall ranking, as he was even able to shave 40 seconds off the previous leader Simon Yates (Orica-Scott). Richie Porte once again presented himself as a specialist for one-week tours. In his career he has already won Paris-Nice, the Tour of Catalonia, the Giro del Trentino, the Volta ao Algarve and most recently this year the Tour Down Under.
Strong performances by the German drivers
Today's winner Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) moved up to third place in the overall standings with his stage win today. This was previously held by the German Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe). Buchmann now has to settle for tenth place in the overall standings. A strong time trial from a German point of view was delivered by Lennard Kämna (Sunweb) in eighth place and Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) in 14th place. So the German cycling fans can be quite satisfied with the Tour de Romandie. At the Prolog drove Schachmann in third place. On the 1st stage he took over the jersey of the best young professional. Michael Schwarzmann (Bora-hansgrohe) was on the 3st stage in the mass sprint only by Elia Viviani (Sky) and Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) defeated. Yesterday Emanuel Buchmann succeeded in the mountain finish of the 4st stage Third place and the jump to the same place in the overall classification.
The Swiss Stefan Küng wins the points classification
The Swiss also had reason to celebrate. Michael Albasini (Orica-Scott) won that 1th part and Stefan Küng (BMC) was on the 2st stage victorious. In addition, Stefan Küng was able to win the points classification. Like last year, victory in the mountains classification goes to Sander Armée (Lotto Soudal). The Belgian really deserved this triumph. After all, he was in a breakaway every day. In the junior classification, Maximilian Schachmann was beaten by Pierre Latour (Ag14r) by just 2 seconds. The team standings went to Movistar ahead of Orica-Scott by five seconds.
