Spectrum: Red Bull Wire Esel is celebrating the 200th birthday of the bicycle with a special campaign. We are looking for bike-mad hobbyists who work in teams of two to create the bike design of tomorrow. The creative bicycles will be presented to an expert jury on June 10, 2017 as part of the MonnemBike Festival in Mannheim - the place where Karl von Drais invented the balance bike in 1817.
All bike-loving inventors are called upon to design and build a bike themselves in a team of two. It is completely up to the participants which material is used or how the mechanical problems are solved. The teams also have a completely free hand when it comes to design. What counts is exceptional style, inventiveness and creative implementation. However, there are specifications regarding the total weight and the maximum dimensions. In addition, the bike must not use any external energy source, so it must be propelled by the driver's muscle power. Other requirements are - hardly worth mentioning - a functioning steering and brakes. You must be at least 18 years of age to take part in the Red Bull Wire Esel.
The Red Bull Wire Esel campaign will take place in three phases. In the first step, the application and creative sketches must be submitted by April 16, 2017. The teams will be informed by April 23 whether the submitted wire donkey sketches have made it into the construction phase. If so, the participants are deep into the second phase – building the bike! The teams have about seven weeks to do this. The decision about the bike will be made on June 10, 2017. After the verdict of the expert jury follows the ride through Mannheim. It's not just about reaching the finish line, but also about proving your ability to drive. The winning team can look forward to a weekend at Specialized's California headquarters with a behind-the-scenes look at design and development.
