Cycling: The 6th stage of the Tour of Catalonia had a lot to offer. Chris Froome (Sky) was left behind, Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) is now the new second overall and just before the finish line two escapees were caught. Meanwhile, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) is now close to his second overall victory at the Tour of Catalonia.
A decision in the overall classification was made early on on the 6th stage of the Tour of Catalonia: Chris Froome (Sky) already lost contact with the first field on the descent of the first mountain. At the end of the day, he lost well over 20 minutes and thus all chances of a top place in the overall standings. In the fight for the day's victory, it looked like a breakaway coup by the two Italians Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) and Dario Cataldo (Astana). A few meters from the finish line, however, they were caught by the first field of around 30 men. The South African Daryl Impey (Orica-Scott) won ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar). Valverde now leads Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) by 53 seconds and will probably celebrate his second overall victory at the Tour of Catalonia in Barcelona tomorrow.
