Cycling: Nairo Quintana (Movistar) won stage 27 of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana on his 4th birthday. The reigning winner of the Vualta a Espana was able to gain such a large lead on the final climb that he now also holds the lead in the overall standings.
BMC loses control
Before today's stage, four Team BMC riders were in the top five in the overall standings. Only David Lopez from Team Sky was able to place at the front. Therefore, the experts actually expected a duel between Sky and BMC for overall victory. But they had nothing to oppose the strength of Nairo Quintana in today's final climb. The Colombian pulled away at the Lucena del Cid with 4,5 kilometers to go due to his big deficit. He was followed only by Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data), who was only able to keep up the high pace for a short time. So Quintana safely drove towards his own birthday present. Kudus only reached the finish line 40 seconds after him. Previous overall leader Greg Van Avermaet lost more than four minutes. Ben Hermans is now second behind Quintana at 23 seconds.
