MTB cycling: With Sabine Spitz and the Czech Jaroslav Kulhavy, two Olympic champions will start at the Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2017. The annual mountain bike race in Cyprus is the start of the new season for many cyclists. The two Olympic champions have been using the Afxentia stage race for years to prepare.
Spitz and Kulhavy have won a total of five Olympic medals in their careers. Even if the Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2017 is not about Olympic medals, the race on the sunny Mediterranean island is considered the first important fitness barometer. 44-year-old Sabine Spitz has extended her career by another year and, like Kulhavy, will compete at the Cape Epic in South Africa. For the Czech, however, last year's race in Cyprus didn't quite go to plan: he broke his hand in a relatively unspectacular fall.
The Cyprus Sunshine Cup has been held for twenty years now. Traditionally, the four-day stage race starts at the end of February. An extended time trial and an enduro-like stage are planned as innovations for 2017. The organizers have also come up with a surprise for the race on March 5th: The venue in Amathous near Agios Tychon is part of the cup again in 2017.
But not only the professional cyclists use the Cyprus Sunshine Cup to prepare for the season, but also more and more hobby cyclists. The attractive four-day format, the professional framework, the beautiful trails and, last but not least, the Mediterranean climate are attracting more and more ambitious leisure cyclists.
