Cycling: Today cycling fans got to see a memorable 10th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. Not only because the escapees were caught in the end and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) recaptured the red jersey with his stage win, but above all because Chris Froome (Sky), who was already a long way behind, ended up almost reaching the very top could.
Cannondale fights for the stage win in a threesome - unsuccessfully
On the way from Lugones to Lagos de Covadonga, the drivers had to cover 188,7 km today. The last twelve kilometers of the stage were supposed to be particularly exciting, because there it went up the Lagos de Covadonga with an average gradient of 7,2%. This mountain belongs to the so-called Categoría Especial, as it is one of the hardest of this year's Vuelta a Espana due to its length and steep passages. So today the eyes were on the class riders, but after about 60 km a few breakaways tried their luck. A total of no fewer than 16 riders broke away, including Ben Hermans (BMC), Robert Gesink (LottoNL-Jumbo), Jan Bakelants (Ag2r), Egor Silin (Katusha), Omar Fraile (Dimension Data), Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis). ) and the three Cannondale pilots Joe Dombrowski, Moreno Moser and Pierre Rolland. While Mate and Fraile were fighting for the first mountain classification, Ben Hermans (BMC) even rode in the virtual red jersey for a short time. Gesink and Rolland, who had one or even two teammates in the group, were particularly interested in winning the stage. As we headed into the final climb, the breakaway's lead had shrunk from around six minutes to less than four. The reason for this was mainly the Movistar team, because they wanted to ride David De La Cruz (Etixx-Quick Step) out of the red jersey again today.
Froome incredible - but Quintana wins
At the front of the leading group, Robert Gesink (LottoNL-Jumbo) was able to break away from his competitors. He drove towards the stage finish as a soloist, but the speed in the group of favorites should thwart his plans - but first things first: When it came to the final climb, Movistar increased the speed again and Chris Froome (Sky) flew back quite early. Only after him could the red De La Cruz not keep up and was distanced. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) recognized the signs of the times and attacked. They were able to pull away together and extend the lead over Chris Froome to around a minute. But suddenly Froome ignited the turbo - as we could see a few days ago. He rolled up the field from behind and swallowed one driver after the other. First De La Cruz had to believe it, then Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and finally even Alberto Contador. Only Nairo Quintana was able to resist Froome's charge and finished 25 seconds ahead of the Briton. He broke away before catching Contador, passed poor Robert Gesink and won the stage. Nairo Quintana also takes over the overall leader's red jersey, while Omar Fraile conquered the mountain jersey in fourth place.
