Cycling: At the end of the 9th Tour de France stage, there was a real water fight. Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) held up his hands in heavy rain and hail after breaking away from a group of leading groups. There were several attacks in the group of favorites, but not large gaps. Only Fabio Aru (Astana) lost a lot of time. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) gave up the Tour de France.
Valverde can't & Contador can't
Before tomorrow's well-deserved rest day, the drivers still had to cover 184 km from Vielha Val d'Aran to Andorra Arcalis. Before the final ascent with the highest category, four more mountains had to be conquered. Due to the retirement of Michael Morkov (Katusha) there were still 197 riders at the start, but there should be some retirements during the stage. Among others, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) climbed into the support vehicle, as his injuries from a fall last night were accompanied by a fever. His teammates Rafal Majka in mountain jersey and Peter Sagan were also part of the leading group, as were Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), among others. However, not being let go, Valverde let himself fall back into the field. The other 20 or so riders were then able to gain a lead of around ten minutes over the course of the stage. The sprint classification was left to Peter Sagan along the way. The mountain classifications were harder fought, as three drivers, Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Rafal Majka and Thibaut Pinot, were interested.
Tom Dumoulin climbs to victory of the day
After Thomas De Gendt was able to break away for a short time, he collapsed as he did a few days ago. Meanwhile, more and more riders dropped out of the leading group and the peloton. Right at the beginning of the final climb, there were several attacks on the day's win, which was supposed to go to the leading group with a nine-minute lead. At first, Tom Dumoulin was able to pull away appreciably, and behind him the chasing group, which was still nine, gradually broke up in the meanwhile light rain. Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) and Rafal Majka went in pursuit. Meanwhile, Thibaut Pinot collapsed. Sky pushed the pace again in the peloton until finally Sergio Henao opened the big fight with an attack about five kilometers before the finish line, just like yesterday. The drivers not only had to endure the pain in their legs, but also brave the heavy rain and hail. There were several attacks, but all of them were equalized. In the end Froome, Quintana, Adam Yates and Porte across the finish line together. Tom Dumoulin, on the other hand, couldn't be stopped. The Dutchman won the first stage of this tour for the German team Giant-Alpecin. Rafal Majka secured third place behind Rui Costa but is now three points behind Thibaut Pinot in the overall mountain classification.
