News Brief: So the rumors are true after all - Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) is dropping out after his four stage wins at the 2016 Tour de France. The decision was made together, driver and team alike decided that the 31-year-old needed a break and shouldn't put himself through the hardships of the Alps shortly before the Olympics.
Mark Cavendish himself says of the decision:
“After great and successful weeks at the Tour de France with Dimension Data, I decided today with a heavy heart to leave the race. After the heat and the high intensity of the stages, analyzing my values showed that I am at a point that is crucial for my second big goal of the season, the Rio Olympics. It was not an easy decision to leave this race, which I have such immense respect for, and our tour team, which is a really tight-knit group. I really want to thank everyone, including the fans, for the support and encouragement today and throughout the last 16 stages. I wish Dimension Data for Qhubeka and all other participants good luck on the last legs to Paris – a special place whose emotions I will certainly miss this year.”
