Vincenzo Nibali rose in the Alps like the phoenix from the ashes. In the chart above, it's nice to see the Messina Shark riding from over 4 minutes down to the front for his second Giro overall win. After his fall during the 19th stage, Steven Kruijswijk narrowly missed out on the podium after an impressive performance at the end. Alejandro Valverde made it onto the podium right away in his Giro premiere. The Spaniard is satisfied and says: "More was not in it." Well then.
However, not everyone was thrilled with the way Nibali secured victory and also how Valverde and Chaves reacted to the fall of then maglia-rosa carrier Steven Kruijswijk on stage 19. Immediately afterwards the pursuers attacked and with that the dream of pink was over for the unlucky raven from the Netherlands. However, he himself took it sportily and said: "Staying on the bike is also part of cycling." He is right.
German Festival at the Giro d'Italia
The performance of the German professionals at this year's Giro was nothing short of sensational. After Marcel Kittel's two superior stage victories at the start and a short interlude in pink, sprinter colleague André Greipel followed up with three more stage victories. Greipel and Kittel got out before the last Giro week – but with Roger Kluge and Nikias Arndt two other German pros celebrated at the stage finishes. But even the seven days' successes cannot hide the fact that there is currently a lack of strong class riders in this country: In the end, the best German in the overall standings was Christian Knees, more than three hours behind.

There were no big surprises in the special rankings. With Nizzolo, Nieve and Jungels, co-favorites each got the coveted classification jerseys - while Jungels and Nizzolo managed the matter quite confidently and were able to make their respective victories clear early on, the mountains classification offered the most excitement. For a long time, Nieve and the former Giro winner Damiano Cunego fought a heated battle for the maglia azzura, which the Sky professional was able to win in the end. A small consolation for the British team, which had started the Tour so hopefully, but had to cope with the failure of their captain and co-favourite, Mikel Landa, early on.
Climatic extremes
As is typical for the Giro, the weather was changeable this year. Contrary to initial fears, however, all stages could be completed as originally planned, with the exception of minimal cuts - also thanks to the tireless efforts of the winter services. The heavy shower during the more than 40 km long individual time trial had a decisive influence. This meant that the specialists who started later could not play to their strengths.
Of the 198 starters, 156 riders finally arrived in Turin after a little more than three weeks. More than 40 professionals had to give up early - some of them did so more or less voluntarily - such as Marcel Kittel, others fell victim to the time limit - such as Elia Viviani, who was unlucky this year, others were afflicted with colds and illnesses at the wrong time, including big names like Mikel Landa and Fabian Cancellara and unfortunately there were some falls and injuries again.
So what sticks in your mind after the 2016 Giro? Certainly an extremely exciting final week and Vincenzo Nibali's incredible race to catch up. Likewise, with Bob Jungels, a young driver was able to indicate great qualities and Steven Kruijswuijk has finally established himself as a high-class classification driver. We experienced many thrilling hours of cycling, fortunately there were no bad falls or other unpleasant incidents. We are already looking forward to chasing Rosa next year – but before that there is still the Grand Boucle and the Tour of Spain in late summer. However, the 2016 Grand Tour year got off to an extremely promising start.
