Cycling: Late yesterday evening the President of the World Federation's Accessories Committee announced that the UCI would again ban the use of disc brakes in its road races until further notice. The reason for the decision was the accident of Movistar driver Francisco Ventoso, who made contact with a brake disc at Paris – Roubaix suffered a deep cut.
That happened quickly – after the first unpleasant incident in the hell of the north last Sunday due to the use of disc brakes, the modern stoppers are now being banned from the peloton again for the time being. Harald Tiedemann Hansen, President of the responsible committee at the UCI, confirmed in the evening that after Ventoso's accident, the decision was made to ban the use of disc brakes until further notice.
The UCI received applause for this decision, above all from the drivers' union CPA. “We have been talking about the risks of using disc brakes for months and we have sent letters to the World Federation several times to minimize these risks. Finally they are listening to us. We don't want to stop progress, but we have to find common solutions when introducing new technologies - without risk for the drivers."
It will be interesting to see how the matter develops. A new test phase is unthinkable, at least for the moment - unless you can present a convincing security concept.
