Triathlon / spectrum: The Ironman Hawaii winner Jan Frodeno was awarded the Bambi in the sports category yesterday evening in Berlin. The Bambi is a television and media prize that is awarded annually in different categories. Frodeno inherits last year's Sport-Bambi winner Nico Rosberg.
"He knows how to torment himself with the greatest success," This is how the former figure skater Katarina Witt described in her laudatory speech the incredible performance that Frodeno achieved at the Ironman. In the single player, which is more than three minutes long, not only is Jan Frodeno and his story from the Olympic victory in 2008 to the Ironman gold in Hawaii 2015 illuminated, but also the discipline of triathlon and the Ironman itself.
Of course, Frodeno himself thanked the jury, also for receiving his award "on this not necessarily sports-related stage" would receive. It is indeed remarkable that the jury chose the triathlete. The winners in recent years have included Nico Rosberg and Jupp Heynckes - and there is no question that Formula 1 and football enjoy a different reputation in the German public than Ironman or triathlon. That's probably why it was a good reason to take his "Exchanging a competition suit for a real suit," as Frodo quipped on stage.
In this sense, the award, with all the honor that Jan Frodeno deserves as a person, is certainly also an award for the triathlon, which we can only welcome. Congratulations!
