Market: Ksyrium wheels from the French company Mavic can now be found in all categories of riders - whether hobby athletes, amateurs or even in the pro peloton: in the past there was the right wheel for almost every requirement. For the coming season, the entire product range will receive a comprehensive update - Mavic is thus taking two main trends into account: wider tires and disc brake compatibility.
Wide rims for Ksyrium Pro and Elite
It is certainly one of the most striking developments in street racing in recent years. While the motto used to be "narrow and hard" when it came to tires, more and more studies, tests and analyzes show that wider tires with less pressure offer advantages in many situations. Mavic also devoted itself to the topic and came to this conclusion. On the one hand, the comfort for the driver naturally increases with a higher air volume and the associated lower pressure. The wider contact surface also improves grip - and to the surprise of many amateur athletes, so does rolling resistance.
That's why the new Ksyrium Pro and Elite wheels come with new rims with an inner width of 17mm - optimal for 25mm wide tires, which are now also used in large parts of the pro peloton. According to Mavic, this should reduce rolling resistance by up to 13%. In the coming year, Mavic will continue to rely on WTS (Wheel-Tyre-System): This means that the wheels will be sold together with tires that are optimally tailored to them - in the case of the Ksyrium Pro and Elite, this is the Mavic Yksion Pro.
Ksyrium now available in carbon
From the coming season, the Ksyrium wheels will also be available in a carbon version. Climbers in particular will be happy about the new option, because the weight drops significantly with the carbon fiber rims. At 405g (clincher) or 300g (tubular), the newly developed rims are very light, but offer all sorts of technical finesse. The carbon rims have an aluminum core that is supposed to ensure effective heat dissipation. Although the weight increases a little due to the metal core, up to 48% shorter braking distances are worth the one or two additional grams for many drivers. Like the aluminum version, the new carbon rims come with an inner width of 17mm (clincher) or an outer width of 23mm for tubular tires.
Disc compatibility for entire Ksyrium range
Disc brakes on road bikes are becoming more and more popular. The hydraulic stoppers are becoming lighter, more reliable and therefore more attractive for use on the road with each passing year. Even the UCI has been thinking aloud since the beginning of the year about a possible rule change that would probably result in the gradual exodus of rim brakes on road bikes. We're not that far yet, but more and more manufacturers are responding to this development and offering road wheels with disc brake mounts. Starting next year, almost the entire Ksyrium range will also be available from Mavic in a disc-specific version. In addition, with almost disc wheels it is possible to convert the hubs from conventional quick-releases to thru-axles (12/15mm on the front, 135/142x12mm on the rear) - the necessary adapters are included in the scope of delivery. Only the Ksyrium Disc model is limited to 9mm on the rear wheel.
Ksyrium Allroad – the one for all
More and more road drivers now and then feel the urge to leave the quiet areas of the asphalt and to make gravel and forest paths unsafe. So far, with most tires and many wheels, it was a proverbial ballet. The new Mavic Ksyrium Allroad WTS is intended to cover exactly this area of application: wheels and tires offer enough reserves to keep control off the road, but only lose a little performance on the asphalt. The special profile of the up to 30mm wide Yksion Allroad tire makes it possible. With an inner width of 19mm, the rim of the Allroad wheelset is perfectly prepared for wide tires and still weighs only 420g.
