After I had almost 2 weeks off from racing due to work, this weekend it really got down to business for me and the other girls. The well-known spring classic Gent – Wevelgem was on the program. After some difficulties getting there, we were happy when we finally reached the starting point on Saturday, where our hotel was at the same time. The long drive was then quickly forgotten after a short "roll out" on the Tacx, a good preparatory massage from Reimund and a good dinner and so we were ready for the fight the following day...
Unfortunately, the weather gods totally let us down on Sunday and so we only had 8 degrees, rain and squalls, which only exist in Belgium or Holland. Nevertheless, we were at the start at 12.25:XNUMX p.m. highly motivated and really wanted to show everyone what we can do.
The race started really quickly, no attack had a realistic chance, and so the field came together to the first key point - the Kemmelberg with its famous cobblestones. We all managed to get into the hill relatively in front, which gave us a good starting position, because after the second hill we were three in a group of about 50 riders. Now it was up to us to persevere and hold out against the wind. Unfortunately, Desi was less fortunate because she fell and had to abandon the race.
After a while, 19 riders broke away from the front, unfortunately we couldn't catch up and then tried to limit the damage at a high-speed finish line towards the end.
All in all a quite successful race with a conciliatory outcome for and girls from the Feminine Cycling Team. We are getting stronger from race to race and are already looking forward to the next challenge =)
Yours, Jacqueline
